INTRODUCTION
Therememe is a project of BoskeCollective, made as a part of Sonar+D Festival 2019 for Istanbul, Turkey by:
Project and Design Team of Boske Collective: Lalin Keyvan, and Mehmet Berk Bostanci.
Sónar is the International Festival of Advanced Music and Congress of Technology and Creativity, celebrated during three days every June in Barcelona. Created in 1994, Sónar is a pioneering cultural event with a unique format and content. It's first class reputation as a leading reference for international festivals is thanks to it's attention in curation, combining a playful nature, the avant-garde, and experimentation with newest trends in dance and electronic music.
As a part of Sonar+D Istanbul experience, Boske Collective made good use of the facial expressions are one of the most innate and intuitive ways to express ourselves and communicate. Therememe interactive installation questions possibilities using these very advanced communication tools that we possess with a different approach and shift focus on the audible instead of the visual. The interaction seeks to prototype an instrument controlled by body language with a simple working model that can be learned through interaction, a theremin played with facial expressions.
The expressions of interacting users’ faces are analyzed and determined by facial landmark recognition algorithms using trained machine learning models. The physical setup is optimized such that the lighting is adequate for facial features of users to be detected by the camera and the algorithm.
