INTRODUCTION
Through the 4th Wall is a workshop showcased as a part of Digilogue's Futute Tellers:Digital
Media Summit 2018 in Istanbul, Turkey by Boske Collective.
Team of Boske Collective: Lalin Keyvan (Creative Director and Project Manager), Mehmet Berk Bostanci
(Creative Director and Interaction Designer)
"The Fourth Wall" is an expression stemming from the world of theater. In most modern theater design,
a room will consist of three physical walls, as well as a an imaginary fourth that serves to separate the world
of the characters from that of the audience.
The aim of this workshop is to ideate and create a collaborative interactive project in order to
break the existing 4th wall in the generic artworks where the spectator became isolated from the
piece. The participants of this workshop will question the passivity of the audience and the unbreakable bond of
artist and art. They will try to create a transparent, dynamic and collaborative scenario with the use of
creative coding (Arduino/Processing).
Face detection and emotion recognition algorithms powered by machine learning models are utilized to determine the positions of the users’ faces and the emotions they are displaying. Emotions are matched with colors to leave marks accordingly on the canvas. Thus the final product is both a result of an interactive effort which the users have direct effect over, and a visualized data map which reveals the collective input and behavior.
